Extraction

SUPERCRITICAL FLUID EXTRACTION (SFE)

Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) is an efficient, non-toxic extraction technique. SFE is used regularly in the food and cosmetic industries, most notably for decaffeinating coffee and producing essential oils. It's the choice method for extracting cannabinoids and terpenes from Cannabis sativa. SFE using supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) produces a pure, full-plant extract that contains no solvents. 

A supercritical fluid is unique in that it exhibits the properties of both a liquid and a gas. Like a gas, it can diffuse through solids. Like a liquid, it can dissolve compounds. (See what scCO2 looks like in this 4 minute video.)

Carbon dioxide is the preferred supercritical fluid for Cannabis extraction because CO2 reaches it's supercritical point at a relatively low temperature and pressure. Terpenes and cannabinoids are sensitive to heat, the ability to extract at a low temperature minimize thermal degradation. By adjusting pressure, it's possible to adjust the solvency power of CO2, which allows for selectivity during the extraction process. Carbon dioxide is also odorless, highly pure, non-toxic, non-flammable, and readily available. 

Post Processing

PSI offers a number of post processing services to further purify extracts. 

winterization

Winterization is a technique used for removing plant waxes from crude extracts. The extract is dissolved in ethanol and then frozen. While plant waxes are soluble in ethanol at low temperatures, they become insoluble when frozen. As the temperature of the oil mixture drops, wax crystals precipitate and grow. Once precipitated, the wax is removed from the oil through filtration. Ethanol is removed with a rotary evaporator.

In distillation, heat and pressure are used to evaporate the extract and separate desired cannabinoids from any remaining unwanted compounds. Distillate are extremely potent.

SUPERCRITICAL FLUID CHROMATOGRAPHY (SFC)

Through Supercritical Fluid Chromatography it is possible to selectively fractionation individual cannabinoids and terpenes.

We strive to maintain the delicate balance of cannabinoids and terpenes found in whole plant Cannabis while focusing on refining formulations that have demonstrated effectiveness in treating conditions.

ANALYTICAL TESTING

We systematically test our products throughout the development process. Plant material is tested for potency, microbial contamination, and pesticides immediately after harvest and before extraction. After both SFE and SFC, we test for potency. Finally, we test our formulations before they are packaged and distributed.
